What goes on at Corman Air Park?Lots of Blue Skies and Fun FlyingWeather statistics show that Saskatoon enjoys more hours of sunshine per year than any other Canadian city. During WWII, numerous bases for the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan were located in the Canadian prairies because of our favourable weather and wide open spaces.
Summer FlyingOur relatively northern lattitude gives us very long summer days. In mid to late June we can fly from 5:00 am until nearly 10:00 pm. Our long, lingering morning and evening periods, usually with calm winds and smooth air, are perfect for ultralight flying.
Winter FlyingWise Canadians know that it's a waste of energy to grumble and complain about our long winters. Better to embrace the cold - make it your friend. In fact, the Corman Air Park flying club members can't wait for the snow to fall so we can put skis on the Norsemen and enjoy an entirely different dimension of flying for a few months. While the temperatures may be chilly, the sky conditions are often clear and sunny. The aircraft cabins are heated so the flying experience is not much different than summer - except the the air is often smooth and stable all day long. We keep the main runway plowed for those pilots not fortunate enough to have skis, but the ski-equipped Norsemen use a groomed snow strip.
Ultralight Flight TrainingOne of the primary activities at Corman Air Park is ultralight flight training. In the photo below, Vern Rees shows a first-time flier the "foot-head-bum" sequence for climbing into the trainers.
Visiting AircraftHardly a week goes by without an interesting aircraft from parts unknown dropping in for fuel or a place to tiedown for the night. The pilot of the head-turning deHavilland Chipmunk (below left) dropped in on his way back from Oskosh. This classic warbird, which is based just five miles away, is the oldest flying Chipmunk in the world and was on display at the Toronto Aerospace Museum during summer 2006 as part of the 60th Anniversary celebrations for the Chipmunk. It is also the front-page feature aircraft of the October 2006 issue of COPA Flight. See the Toronto Aerospace Museum site for more information and pictures. A couple from Pennsylvania were enroute to Alaska in their lovely Maule (below right) and spent a few days here camping under the wing because of bad weather.
Projects in the ShopAt any given time, there is usually someone back in the "skunk works" painting or pulling rivets on some kind of winged project.
